A logo is essentially the face of your business, providing a first impression, whilst also giving something memorable for customers to remember you by. When you think of some of the biggest brands in the world, such as Mcdonald’s, Nike and Google, I bet you can picture their logo instantly in your head. This demonstrates one of the many reasons, why a poignant logo is important for your business. Therefore, if your logo no longer represents your business, or has become outdated, it may be time to upgrade your logo. Not sure if its time for change? Here are 5 signs to help you find out if its time to upgrade.

1. Your logo is not unique.

All successful brands have a USP, something that makes them stand out from the rest and makes them superior. The same should go for your branding. If your logo is similar to everyone else in your industry, you aren’t giving the customer anything to grab their attention away from your competition. You also run the risk of your clients to confuse you with another brand, and this could result in losing custom. Having a logo that stands out from the crowd ensures that you stay memorable, and sets you a cut above the rest from the start.

2. Its outdated.

Your logo may only be a few years old, but that doesn’t mean its still up to date. Design trends change year on year, and your current design may leave you in the dust. Even if you have a strong current customer base, you always want to appeal to new clientele, and having an outdated logo may put potential clients off enquiring with you. The last thing you want is a new customer to think you don’t keep up with the times! Updating your logo doesn’t mean you have to have a whole new brand, you may just make adjustments to your logo to help bring it into the modern day. An example of this would be BMW, who have kept the basis of their logo the same since 1916, but have had some minor adjustments to keep it on trend.

3. You made it yourself.

Although you may be successful in your line of work, and have an eye for what looks good and what looks bad, it unfortunately doesn’t make you a graphic designer. Programmes such as Canva make it easy to create your own basic logo for business, but as your business grows, it may not be able to keep up with the growth of your business. A graphic designer spends time developing their skills to ensure they can create bespoke designs for your logo, and bespoke is not something you are able to create yourself. Any good manager knows to delegate the tasks they aren’t proficient in to the people who are, so it may be time to let go of that old logo you designed yourself, and draft in the pro’s to take your logo to the next level.

4. No one gets it.

As we’ve mentioned previously, a good logo needs to demonstrate what the business is about instantly. With so many brands out there, it’s important to convey your message in the short amount of time it takes for someone to check out your logo. If your logo doesn’t represent your business offering, your customers and potential investors may be confused, and you may be appealing to the wrong market. If your business has developed significantly since your logo was created, it may no longer represent you and your business. A poor choice of logo may show potential customers that you don’t understand your market and put them off choosing you.

5. It doesn’t meet the standards for your industry.

There’s nothing wrong with a little creativity, and standing out from the crowd is important, however, you must maintain the standard of your industry. If your industry has recently levelled up and those around you have a much more professional logo, you must follow suit. If your logo is cheesy, whilst the rest of your industry is full of clean cut logos, you will stand out, but for all the wrong reasons. Its important to make sure that your logo conveys your message, whilst sticking to industry standards.
