What would a customer type into Google?

Leave this and we'll find the ones beating you for you.

  • A clean search, not your own Google
  • Your spot in the Google map
  • Who's beating you, and by how much
  • What to fix first, in plain English

Why your own Google search isn't the real answer

Search your own business on your own phone and Google already knows you. It has your location, your history and every time you've clicked your own site. So you look higher than a stranger would see you. This checker runs a clean search from the town you pick, the way a new customer would.

Want help with what the results show? Here's how we get local businesses found on Google, and our free website audit checks the technical side.

Questions people ask

Why does my own Google search show me higher?

Google personalises results to you: where you are, what you have searched before and the sites you visit. Searching your own business on your own phone usually makes you look better placed than you are. This checker runs a clean search from the town you pick, which is much closer to what a new customer sees.

What is the map at the top of Google?

For local searches Google often shows a map with three businesses above the normal results. Getting into it is mostly down to your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the person searching, not just your website. The checker tells you when that map shows and whether you are in it.

What does the visibility score mean?

It is a score out of 100 based on where you show for each search you check. Page 1 counts for most of it and the top three most of all. Being in the map counts as being at the top. Page 2 counts a little and beyond that almost nothing, because that is how people click.

How do you pick my competitors?

If you leave them blank we take the websites that turn up most often on page 1 across your searches. We skip directories and social sites like Yell, Checkatrade and Facebook, because they show up for everything and are not who you are really up against.

Is it free?

Yes. Your score is on screen straight away. Pop your details in to unlock the full breakdown, the competitor comparison and what to fix first, and we will email you a copy.

How often do rankings change?

A little, all the time. Google reshuffles results daily and moves things more after its bigger updates. One check is a snapshot, so it is worth running again in a month to see which way you are heading.
