Why "AI-Built in 30 Seconds" Is a Scam

Why "AI-Built in 30 Seconds" Is a Scam

Every LinkedIn bro is posting a sped-up screencast of a "£10k website" built in 30 seconds. The sites are awful. Here's what's actually happening on screen, and what it'll cost you.

Every other reel right now is some guy in a hoodie typing "build me a £10,000 agency website" into a tool, fast-forwarding 30 seconds, and pointing at a finished page like he's just performed surgery. The comments are full of "this is insane" and "web designers are cooked".

Web designers are not cooked. The sites in those videos are terrible. The trick is that nobody watches them at normal speed, on a real phone, after the dopamine hit wears off.

What a 30-second AI site actually produces

Pause one of those reels at the end. Open the live URL on your phone. Then tell me what's actually on the page.

  • A generic Bento grid hero with three vague feature cards
  • AI stock photos of "happy people" with seven fingers and a third earlobe
  • Copy that says "empower your business" and means absolutely nothing
  • A pricing section invented out of thin air for a service that doesn't exist
  • Zero thought given to who's actually buying or why
  • A contact form, badly aligned, that probably doesn't email anyone

It looks like a website. It functions like a placeholder. There's no offer, no positioning, no hierarchy of decisions, no thought about what someone hitting that page is actually trying to do. It's a beautiful, animated, perfectly-coded brochure for nothing.

Why founders keep falling for it

Because the demo always looks great. Sped-up screencasts are designed to look impressive. You see a blank screen, then a finished page, in the time it takes to make a coffee. Of course you're sold.

What you don't see is the founder, three weeks later, trying to edit a paragraph and breaking the layout. Or wondering why their site has zero enquiries in a month. Or working out that the "AI" couldn't write a real offer because nobody told it what makes their business different. Because nobody asked.

The honest version of AI in web design

Here's the bit the bros skip. AI is genuinely brilliant at this. It writes first-draft sections in seconds. It generates visuals that used to need a photoshoot. It builds reusable components, scaffolds layouts, gets you 60% of the way there in a fraction of the time.

We use it daily at AW Media. It's why our AI-Accelerated landing pages start at £695 instead of £3,000. It's why a site that used to take six weeks now takes two. Speed and price genuinely have moved.

But AI doesn't know who your customer is. It doesn't know why someone would pick you over the competitor down the road. It doesn't know that your booking form needs to handle deposits, or that your homepage needs to convert cold paid traffic, not just look nice on dribbble. That bit is still strategy. That bit is still design.

What good AI-Accelerated work actually looks like

AI builds the scaffolding. A designer makes the decisions. Brand, hierarchy, offer, positioning, CTA logic, what to remove. Then AI accelerates the build of every component on top of that. The output looks bespoke because it is. It just costs less and ships faster.

The difference between that and the 30-second reel is the difference between a site that earns its keep and a site that's a digital business card you paid £40 a month for.

If the demo is impressive, ask to see the analytics six months later. That's when the real story comes out.
