Most PTs spend hours fighting the Instagram algorithm while their ideal clients are typing "personal trainer near me" into Google. Here is how to win that search instead.
Here is the uncomfortable truth most personal trainers do not want to hear. You are pouring hours into Reels, story polls and gym selfies, while roughly 80 percent of the people who would happily pay you are typing "personal trainer near me" into Google. They are not scrolling. They are searching. And if you do not turn up, your nearest competitor does.
Local SEO is the asset most PTs ignore because it does not feel as glamorous as content. It also does not require a 12-week course or a Meta Ads degree. Done properly, it turns your website into a quiet machine that brings in qualified leads while you are coaching. Here is what actually moves the needle.
Google Business Profile is your real homepage
Before anyone sees your site, they see your Google Business Profile (the box that pops up on the map). If yours is half-finished, you are losing leads to PTs whose training programmes are objectively worse than yours.
Treat your profile like a landing page, not an afterthought:
- Fill every single field. Hours, services, training categories, payment methods, all of it.
- Use real photos. Your face, your gym, your clients (with permission). No stock dumbbells.
- Post weekly. Offers, transformations, new slots opening. Google rewards active profiles.
- Pick the right primary category. "Personal trainer" beats "Fitness centre" for solo PTs nine times out of ten.
Build a service page for each area you actually serve
If you train clients across Sheffield, Rotherham and Chesterfield, you need three separate location pages. Not three lines of text on your homepage saying "I cover South Yorkshire." That does not rank.
Each location page should target one place plus one service. Think "Personal Trainer in Rotherham" or "Online Coaching for Busy Parents in Sheffield." Talk about the local gyms you work from. Mention the postcodes. Add real testimonials from clients who live there. Google reads all of it.
Real reviews, not Fiverr ones
Reviews are the single biggest ranking signal in local search after the profile itself. They are also the thing prospects scan before they even click your site. The bar is higher than you think. A 4.6 with 40 detailed reviews beats a 5.0 with 6.
Ask every client at the end of their first month. Send a direct link. Do not buy reviews, ever. Google now uses pattern detection that catches them quickly, and one suspension wipes out your local visibility for months.
Stop blogging, start writing service pages
Most PT sites have a blog with three posts from 2022 about protein and a thin services page that says "I offer 1:1, group, and online." Flip it. Service pages are where the money is.
Write a proper page for each thing you sell. Online coaching, 1:1 sessions, small group training, transformation programmes, female-focused training, postnatal, over 50s. Each one should answer the same questions a prospect asks on a sales call: who it is for, what is included, how long, how much (roughly), and what happens next.
The one technical thing that breaks most PT sites
Mobile speed. That is it. Beautiful Wix or Squarespace template with a 12MB header video, slick parallax sections, six embedded Reels. Loads in 8 seconds on a phone. Google notices, your bounce rate doubles, and you wonder why no one books.
Compress every image (under 200KB is a sensible ceiling). Kill the auto-playing background video. If your homepage scores under 50 on PageSpeed Insights mobile, fix that before anything else. We see a measurable lift in calls and form fills the week clients go from 30 to 80.
Your 7-day local SEO sprint
If you want to actually do this rather than nod along, here is the order. One thing per day, evenings only.
- 1Day 1: Claim, verify, and fully complete your Google Business Profile.
- 2Day 2: Upload 12 real photos. Write your first profile post.
- 3Day 3: Ask 10 happy clients for a Google review with a direct link.
- 4Day 4: List the 3-5 areas you serve. Outline one location page for each.
- 5Day 5: Write the strongest one. Publish it. Link to it from your homepage.
- 6Day 6: Run PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Compress every image over 300KB.
- 7Day 7: Build a proper page for your highest-margin service. Add a clear booking CTA.
Where this gets you
None of this is glamorous. It is also the reason some PTs in your city have a 6-month waitlist and others run constant sales. The trainers who win local search are not necessarily the best coaches. They are the ones who treated their website like a business asset rather than a digital business card.
Pick a Monday. Run the 7 days. You will rank for things you have never ranked for before, and the leads will follow.
